WinterCare: Why It Matters

Last winter Community Action agencies assisted Kentuckians with approximately $59 million in heating aid. With a proposed $2.5 billion cut to LIHEAP, support to programs like WinterCare is critical to help families in need keep the heat on through frigid winter months.

Each year, Owen Electric Cooperative works hand in hand with area Community Action Kentucky agencies to help support families in need of financial assistance to keep their heat on through its WinterCare program. Owen Electric members can designate a donation to the WinterCare fund on their electric bill; Owen Electric matches its members' donations dollar for dollar up to $5,000 each year.

Last winter, Community Action agencies assisted Kentuckians with approximately $59 million in heating aid, said Kate Haydon, a community services specialist with Community Action Kentucky. In the breakdown of winter 2010-2011, aid was given to thousands of households where elderly, disabled, and children were residents.

With a proposed $2.5 billion cut to LIHEAP, donations from those who have a few spare dollars to give are critical for this winter season. Many of the people who benefited from the program last year may not be able to receive assistance this winter.

Owen Electric is working closely with the Community Action Kentucky network to prepare families and help them stay warm this winter. Households with vulnerable people, particularly elderly, those with disabilities and small children are being advised to take the following steps:

  • Explore the possibility of setting up a budget plan with your energy provider.
  • Consider taking advantage of an energy efficiency program provided by your energy provider or your local Community Action Agency.
  • Practice energy conservation.
  • Exercise good saving habits and find out about possible personal and family budget counseling available at your local Community Action Agency.
